The Automated-Internet Vocabulary: 25 terms
From slop to model collapse to C2PA: twenty-five plain-language definitions for navigating the synthetic internet,…
WING I · FIELD VOCABULARY · 25 ENTRIES, PLAIN LANGUAGE

The automated web has a dialect. Learn it and half the fog lifts on its own. Alphabetical, cross-linked, no jargon left undefined.
- ASTROTURFING
- Manufactured grassroots — paid or automated voices posing as spontaneous public opinion. The product isn't the posts; it's the feeling that "everyone thinks this." Field training at the Bot Watch.
- BOT
- Software operating an account or making requests without a human at the wheel. Ranges from benign (search crawlers, uptime monitors) to hostile (scam rings). "Bot" without context is a mood, not a measurement.
- BOTNET / BOT RING
- Many automated accounts steered together — amplifying, following, and replying to each other to simulate consensus. Individually deniable, collectively geometric.
- C2PA / CONTENT CREDENTIALS
- An open technical standard that lets cameras and software cryptographically sign where a file came from and what edited it — provenance as paperwork rather than vibes. The durable end of the detection arms race.
- CAPTCHA
- "Prove you're human" tests — now a daily ritual in which machines judge people, while other machines learn to pass. The inversion the terminal's front door jokes about, without joking.
- CONTENT FARM
- An operation producing high-volume, low-cost content to harvest search and ad revenue. Historically sweatshops of underpaid writers; increasingly server racks. Economics at the Fall.
- DEAD INTERNET THEORY
- The claim that most online activity is no longer human — born as forum lore around 2021, exaggerated in its strong form, uncomfortably directionally right since. The honest autopsy lives at the Fall.
- DEEPFAKE
- Synthetic audio/video depicting a real person doing or saying what they didn't. The face is the payload; your trust in footage is the vulnerability. Frame-level tells at the Theater.
- DIFFUSION MODEL
- The image-generation technique behind most synthetic pictures: start from noise, denoise toward a description. Why synthetic images feel "dreamed" — they were never seen, only converged upon.
- ENGAGEMENT FARMING
- Posting engineered to maximize reactions — outrage, awe, fill-in-the-blank bait — because reach is currency regardless of truth. The metabolism every swarm shares.
- ENSHITTIFICATION
- Coined term for a platform lifecycle: serve users → squeeze users for business customers → squeeze everyone for the platform. Used here descriptively: the gravity that makes floods of cheap content profitable.
- HALLUCINATION
- When a generative model states false things fluently and confidently. Not lying — lying requires knowing. The confidence is the dangerous part.
- LATERAL READING
- Verifying a source by leaving it — opening new tabs about the claim and the claimant instead of studying the page harder. The master habit of professional fact-checkers. Drilled at the Drill Yard.
- LLM (LARGE LANGUAGE MODEL)
- The text engine behind machine writing — trained on vast text to predict the next word, capable of fluent prose in any register. The ghost in the Ghostwriter Test.
- MODEL COLLAPSE
- Degradation that occurs when models train on synthetic output from earlier models — copies of copies, detail averaging away. Demonstrated live as THE ROT in the Quarantine Zone.
- OUT-OF-BAND VERIFICATION
- Confirming identity or claims through a second, independent channel — the callback, the passphrase, the walk down the hall. The only protocol on this site stamped DURABLE.
- PARASOCIAL
- A one-way relationship with a persona who doesn't know you exist — now industrialized, since personas can be synthetic, tireless, and A/B-tested for attachment.
- PROMPT
- The instruction given to a generative model. The craft this site's own keeper practices — see for what that means here.
- PROVENANCE
- A record of where content came from and what touched it. Every exhibit tag on this site is provenance practiced as a habit.
- RAGE-BAIT
- Content engineered to provoke anger because anger outperforms every other emotion in the feed's arithmetic. Dissected on the table at the Mirror Maze.
- SEO SPAM / SLOP SITES
- Machine-written pages tuned to rank in search rather than inform — arbitraging the gap between generation cost and ad revenue.
- SIFT
- Stop · Investigate the source · Find better coverage · Trace to the original. A media-literacy standard, and the root form of every verification kata here.
- SLOP
- The vernacular term for low-effort synthetic content flooding feeds and search — the sediment this whole excavation dug through. Quantity is its quality.
- SOCKPUPPET
- A fake persona operated by someone concealing their identity — the artisanal, hand-operated ancestor of the bot ring.
- VOICE CLONE
- A synthetic copy of a specific person's voice, buildable from seconds of audio. Why your family needs a passphrase — protocol at the Voice Lab.
